The Tilta Mirage Motorized VND Kit is a modular matte box system designed for filmmakers who need real control over exposure without touching the lens. The motorized variable ND lets you adjust density remotely, avoiding vibration and keeping shots consistent. It works with wireless control systems like the Nucleus-M/Nano, giving you ND adjustments in real time during takes — useful when lighting changes and you don’t have time to stop.
The kit is lightweight, built for mirrorless and cinema cameras, and supports standard 95mm clamp-on mounting. The chassis is solid enough for daily production, but minimal compared to bulkier matte boxes. The VND module uses two high-quality polarizers to deliver clean, predictable light reduction with fewer color shifts than cheap filters. Still, it’s not magic — with extreme ND positions, you can expect mild cross-polarization like any VND.
Tilta’s modular setup lets you add filter trays, lens hoods, and other accessories if needed. Powering the motor requires a standard 5V source, which is straightforward if your rig is already built around a power distribution system. The kit is practical for gimbal operators, documentary shooters, and anyone who needs exposure changes while moving.
